Evaluation

I think overall, the products turned out fantastic. They looked really professional and Martin Tucker and Emma Kelly loved and hope to use them for future marketing. I think the quality would be better if they printed professionally on proper card like the booklets used now are.

My skills for photo shop have definitely been tested and have improved majorly. Also we had to figure out new strategies when problems occurred with text or images.

I worked really well on this project, as it was more challenging than the first one. This was because it was more demanding than the first one as we had a client to work to this time.

You have to be more organized for a client and you have to make what they want instead of making your own product and design.

Both of our products looked really professional and different to what they have designed. He said he likes the designs of both our products. I think the images were really good and I liked the design of the pictures inside with a border and shadow round them. Also I like the design of the bookmarks in the circular picture idea as though you look through a hole and see the image on the other side. There were a few weaknesses on the bookmarks such as pictures chosen and some minor spelling mistakes but these can all be improved. There were a few problems that occurred such as finding images but we found our why round them.

I will use this experience in the future as we have future projects that we need to work with clients or careers maybe in the future. I will also use this experience in the order to make my skills look better in my portfolio if I choose to apply for university. I have gained many skills in this project. They are all transferable skills that could be used or will be used in any ones career or lifetime nowadays. Here they are:

  • layout
  • Page design
  • Text
  • Photo imaging
  • Photoshop
Here are a list of careers that these skills could be used in:
  • Website designs
  • advertising
  • magazines
  • desktop puublishing
These skills I think I might use in any of the careers I have hopefully.

Martin Tucker and Emma Kelly are the clients we are working with.

Quotes / Audience feedback:

Martin Tucker:Bookmarks - ' These are useful.' 'These could be used at marketing events.'

Booklets - 'Change the pictures of the classrooms maybe to the one of your media room: show inside of classroom.

Emma Kelly: ' They will appeal to older students. We do bookmarks at the moment that are aimed at 14-16 year olds.

'Generally when doing text, don't separate a word on to two lines.'

Harvey: He said he thinks they are generally good and interesting. There are a few things he would like us to change. Here they are: The picture in booklet of the view is a bit dark so could do with lightning up a bit. The picture for nice environment could be changed because the door is in the way. I need to fix the little spelling/grammar mistakes.

Dylan: I really like the idea of using the circles to create interest as well as using questions to engage the audience. I also think the simple design works well. You have a unique idea and I think it works for the brief.

Sam: The bookmarks are really good but could redo the photo of the classroom without the door in it. Otherwise really good.

Shay: I really like the idea of the bookmarks - I haven't seen other colleges do this, and it's great because bookmarks are something that people - especially students - will reuse. I also like that the circles on the bookmarks reflect the round windows in the architecture of the building. The images are really effective, I really like the product and think you fulfilled the brief really well!

Ben: I like your overall design of both products. The clean-cut design and layout of each is very well executed. The imagery used is very professional and I am amazed by some of the images taken/used. I also like how you have been able to replicate the same design onto many different templates (regarding your bookmarks).

I also like your design of the booklet. It is very well laid out and planned out. I cannot criticise from what I have seen. I can only recommend you take this product further.

Jack: I feel that you have worked very effectively in this commission project. I am sure Martin Tucker liked your products and will use them to market the college. In my opinion, the product looks very professional and I cannot see any element that needs criticism. I really like the simplicity of both products, but I am also impressed with how you managed to keep it stylish and appealing. You also managed to keep the same theme as the products that the college currently uses but you also managed to make it very original. Overall, it's a brilliant piece of creativity!

We also tested out our products on our target audience which is school students aged 14 - 16. We did some questionnaires on Mounts Bay students that had a taster day in this college for media. We laid out the bookmarks and booklets on the table so that they could see them so that they could answer the questionnaire. They gave us lots of great critism such as ' We probaly wouldn't use these bookmarks as we don't read. If we do decide to read then we read magazines or newspapers.' The questionnaires are in the envelope if you wish to have a look.

I think we received great feedback about our products and some helpful suggestions about what to improve on.

Practice of presenting our products to harvey

Today we did a run through with Harvey about presenting our products. He came up with a few questions that Martin Tucker (our client) could ask. These were the following:
* How did you come up with the designs of the bookmarks?
* What would you change if you were to do it again?
* How does your product fulfill the commission?
He also did an impression of Emma kelly about if he wanted to use our products then what would be the cost and what our intellectual property rights were.

Secondary Research

We have looked at different types of products that could help us designing ours. Here are a couple of designs :

Here are a couple of designs for booklets that helped us:

These booklets gave us designs for the picture stamps, pattern design and colours.

Polarization - Photography

In the last two weeks in Creative Media Photography we have been learning about polarization. Polarization is a technique used by a special filter with crystalised slats to either take away relfections or enhance them. Also certain filters can be used to darken shadows and the sky to make other sections of the photo look enhanced. We learnt this last week.

This week we learnt how to bring out all the colours in a transparent object. We did this by having an old fashioned projecter then put a peice of difusior film on top then you put the polarization filter on top. You also have a polarization filter on the camera. Once you turn the focus and the filter you can increase or change slightly the patterns the colours are in.

The picture on the right is using the
Filter.

Technology / Techniques used in this project

In this project i have used many techniques, here are a list of them:
  • On the text i have used effects such as Drop shadow, Bevel and Emboss, Stroke and shadow. These are the main ones on text.
  • I have used the Elliptical marquee tool to cut out pictures in a circle to use in my bookmark.
  • Also lots of creative text.
  • I edited the pictures to improve the colour and tone of the picture.
  • For the pictures in the booklet I put them onto a white background then flattened the image and used the Rectangular marquee tool to cut them out and stick them on the booklet design.
  • I used a drop shadow and stroke to give the picture the effect of being printed out of a Polaroid camera.
  • I used a tool on the Mac keyboard to cut out a section of the map I wanted.
These are the only pieces of technology I have used:
Digital camera
Digital SLR camera
USB lead (to download the pictures on to computers.)
Apple Mac computer
Windows computer
Printer
USB memory stick
Scanner

Copyright issues

There are certain issues when it comes to copyright as it is quite a tricky subject. You are aloud to use peoples objects as long as you don't try and make prophets from your product. Also if big companies have bought into all their products you cannot use a clip for more then a couple of seconds otherwise it is illegal. Also if you are portraying a bad message about that company than it is illegal to use any of their products to do that.

Also we learnt about intellectual property rights. This is when someone makes a product or uses somebody Else's work, the client (which is either you or someone else) has to either buy it straight out which means the person who made the product gets one large amount of money at once or pay gradually which means person who made the product gets a percentage each time that product sells.

I learnt how to use these rules in my Project which is all graphic design work. I learnt that to use the college logo we have to make it a certain size and that I'm not allowed to use other peoples pictures unless I asked them or bought it, but I took all the pictures I used myself.

proposal Bookmark (real)

We are going to make a bookmark with the same design as the Internet advert we were going to do. On the front is going to be a black whole with one question about the college and then a picture of the area and a picture of the college on the back. We would do it as a series of 12, so there would be on each one a different question and a different picture to collect. So every time they email the college about the course or come to an opening evening they get the next one. The idea is to draw them into the college and then they see how good it is and what options they have here. We would use the email idea to the students coming from different countries.

The budget of this is:

Net price: 67.81 +VAT: 11.87 = GROSS PRICE: 79.68

I think here me and my friend were creative thinkers as we came up with this idea and had to think creatively.

Budgets & Health and Safety

Today we had a session on Budget and Health & Safety within the media. Our specific objective was make up artists working on the next avatar movie because instead of doing it all in a computerised format they want to use actors and do it all free hand. We had to work out what objects they would need and how much they would cost to use or buy to last 10 years. Also we had to work out how much the make up artist's wages would cost. Here are some examples that we came up with: Equipment - lighting - £20,000 , Paint make up - £5000
Next we had to think of health and safety elements for example: Vaccinations, sun block if filming in hot place.

Commission Project Budgeting
We have found out budgets for our products by doing a quote on a website called http://www.saxoprint.co.uk/shopo2/Main.aspx?=flyer

The budget for our Booklets is: £65.46
The budget for our bookmarks is:
Net: 67.81 +VAT: 11.87 = Gross: 79.68
I think here I was an effective particapator and a reflective learner as we had to engage in a group disscussion as well as learn and right about the things we learnt.

University Trip

We went to falmouth university on Wednesday 17th March to look at the range of courses they have at their University. Also it was the UCAS convention. This is where all the universities in the country come together and show their colleges to the students. They each have their own stall and 2-3 people from each university their to give you leaflets and answer any questions you have for them. There are a few courses that sound interesting but i am going to continue my research into it.

At this UCAS convention we were able to pick up some booklet and bookmarks that influenced our own design on our products. Here are a few examples:

I think here I was a reflective learner as Found out ideas then enco-operated them in my work.

Our project so far

We have started to make our bookmarks and our photo booklets. They are going quite well. For our booklet we decided that the front and back pages will be white with designs on it in mainly blue and green colour. The inside pages will be green/blue background with swirl design and pictures of students, the area and college with comments from staff and students.

Here is our template for our bookmarks:

Here is our template for our photo booklet:

We have changed a few details slightly in our booklet as we have less comments and a there a few changes on the front and back page.
I think here I was a team worker as we worked as a team to produce these designs.

PLTS 3rd march

Today the plts was Team Worker. We worked in a group of 5 to discuss activities for trengwainton gardens for them to use all year round. We come up with a couple ideas such as treasure hunt, family bike rides and plant your own plant in a little patch. We pitched these ideas to the group and they liked all of our ideas especially the grow you own plant.

I think i worked with others to acheive targets and i was able to discuss ideas and make desicions as part of a team.

Changing ideas

We decided to change our project as we found out that we were not skilled enough to make an advert on the college website. If we were skilled highly it would still take many months commitment that we could not give to it. Also we did not have the correct equipment or software to allow us to make this product.
We talked to many lectures about our new idea and they were able to give us support and help us with this as they all had different little ideas and skills for us to put in our product. One of the lectures is our graphic design teacher so each week he is going to be there to help us and give us little hints and information to use in our product.
I think we had to be team worker to work together to figure out what we were going to do, but also a creative thinker to thinker of new ideas.

Theatrical Make up over the weeks

Today we are going to try out theatrical make-up with jade (second to last lesson), not sure what it's going to be like yet but quite excited to try it out, hopefully it won't look to scary. We are going to try and make it look like we have a black eye or bruising round that area.
It looked quite effective and we might edit in photoshop yet to make it look even more realistic.

This week we are going to try and make it look like we have a broken nose. We will do this by applying wax to that area. This might take a bit longer to do but we have a bit longer to do it today. We will again be work in pairs like we did last time. I think we will enjoy it as I did very much last time.
I think I was team worker and effective participator here as we had to work in pairs to apply make up to each other.

Me in 5 years time

Today we have looked at and talked about our future careers after we have finished this creative media diploma. We looked at the Falmouth University Website and what kind of courses they have. At the moment i am quite unclear about what i want to do but i am really interested in their photography course.

Their are PLTS that this course choose to follow by. These are the Personal Learning Thinking Skills:
*Creative thinker - I think this is the main PLTS this course would use.
*Independent Enquirer
*Reflective Learner
*Team Worker
*Effective Particapator
*Self Manager

Here is a link to the website that I found the information:
Falmouth University
In five years time I would like to be a Photographer who takes pictures of weddings and people in general.

I think here I have been a reflective learner because I was reflecting on my future.

Tour of the New Build

Today we went to the new build that will be opening next week on Monday 1st March. We were given a tour by Kevin Buzza who is the head of Personal. First of all before we had the tour we had to have a health and safety induction. In this we were told what safety clothes we had to wear and who we had to go to if we needed first aid, also lots of other important and interesting areas of Health and Safety. The tour was quite interesting and every room was different, it felt like each room had it's own special characteristics. When we move in there next week we will be able to film footage and take pictures, also lots of other aspects of media such as radio of or about the new build which we will use for our commision project. Our new media room is on the top floor, I think and we get a great view of the penzance area and beach/sea and St Michael's Mount. There are lots of intersting subjects going on in this new build such as catering, hair and beauty, media realted courses and lots, lots more. We have amazing views everywhere we go and I'm quite excited to start learning in there on Monday.

I think here I was an independent enquirer as we each walked round having our own opinion about things in the new build and we each wrote about the tour differently.

Proposal

Date: 29th January 2009

Production and editor crew: Daniella Griffiths and Biyan Li

Production company: Truro and Penwith College

Production start date: 2nd February 2010

Working title: Photo booklet

Duration: 4 pages

We would like to make a booklet containing photos and comments of new build and students. We would have the background in the style of Penwith college. We will include pictures of the new build; students in lessons and enjoying themselves round the college. The comments could be from lecturers, students and public n general if they wanted to.

This would cost (£ 65.46) to make a good quality A5 booklet.

Working title: Web advert

We are going to try and make an advert that catches people’s attention and interest. We will and try and make it like this example. We chose to do it like this because we want people to read the questions then look at the question mark to find the answer. Also the answer is really small so they don’t spot it straight away. We got the idea of doing this kind of style for an advert by this advert. (Peugeot 308) This advert is trying to get people think what is that inside that box. It makes them interested and catches their attention. This is what we are trying to do, they can see the questions, which represent the box, but they are trying to see who it is which represents the spy hole in the box.

Target Audience: We are focusing on bringing in more students from different countries to learn a language or do a course here. We will try and emphasise about our lovely scenery and why they should come here rather than Truro College. They will be mainly aged 16+ as our college don't really have people younger than that wanting to study here. We would like them to get the feel of Penwith college being welcoming and fun NOT scary.

Time Management plan

8th - 12th: Pre-production (budget, risk assessment), Booklet
15th - 19th: HALF TERM
22nd - 26th: Start making web advert, booklet (Produce an outcome that will satisfy the client)
1st - 5th: Continue advert, booklet (Produce an outcome that will satisfy the client)
8th - 12th: Continue advert, booklet (Produce an outcome that will satisfy the client)
15th - 19th: Finish advert, booklet (Produce an outcome that will satisfy the client),Gaining audience feedback.
22nd - 26th: Present completed products to client.
29th - 1st: finish paperwork and present everything in folders.

This has changed slightly as we changed our idea of a web advert to bookmarks, but the general time management is still the same. Also we now have extra time to work on finishing our product as we are leaving LO5 till after easter. LO5 is presenting products to clients and finishing off the paperwork.

I think here I was a self Manageras I had to manage my time well.

Brief of our graphic design/media project

We have decided to make a photographic booklet. We will try to apply a colour scheme and background that will catch their eye but represents the college and the area. The booklet will be a4 folded size (A5) and we would like to use the blue green colours which represents the college style and the seaside area.

This is our target audience: This will be designed for students coming to study here from abroad. This will be targeted at a male and female audience. They will be mainly aged 16+ as our college don't really have people younger than that wanting to study here. We would like them to get the feel of Penwith college being welcoming and fun NOT scary.

I think they would relate to the kind of colours that Truro and Penwith college use because not does it represent the new college well, but it represents the area we are in. The blue/green colours they use represent the countryside and the seaside/beach are we live and study in.

Here are the sort of blue/green colours that our college uses to represent the college and the area around it:

I think here I was a creative thinker and teamworker as we had to think about what product we
wanted to do and we had to work together to decide what to make.

Visit to trengwainton gardens

We are going on a trip to Trengwainton gardens which will inform us about the kind of work we could do for them. This trip could open up a wide range of projects and work experience opportunities. The sort of work you could do is make promotional materials for their family trail or their wet nose day on the 2nd of may. We could also use their location to make a short film their after Easter in many different types of genres or do some really good photography work on the views of St Michael's mount from there or the plants which would be quite enjoyable.

We went to Trengwainton gardens and unfortunately it was raining so we couldn't get the footage and photographs that we would have liked to get. We are hoping to go again soon in the summer so we can catch all the footage or photographs we need. It would have been nice to look round if wasn't raining but hopefully we should see the full potential of the garden next time.

We went for a second time and we got some better photographs to use for this project or work experience. We also took our posters back to them to get feedback but unfortunately they said they already had a layout that they said they were going to use for wet nose day. I think there are still work experience opportunities in the future which sound quite interesting.

This has been like a mini version of the project which we are going to do next which is called interact. This where you go out and find a local organisation to make either promotional materials or marketing materials for them.
I think here I was a reflective manager because I was reflecting and looking at what the next project would be. Also I was a team worker as I was working with someone to take photo's and make a poster together.

Audience Feedback from martin tucker (Pitch)

He told us that the main aspect he wants us to focus on is the web advert on the college website. This advert would also be on a website maybe that we make just to show the advert and about the college. He would still like us to do the video and the photo booklet. He liked the target audience we chose (potential students from abroad). I think overall it went really well and we explained everything clearly and he was really clear on what he would like. All we have to propose to him now is the budget.

College Radio Adverts - Target Audience

Advert 1:
1. Who are the target audience?
I think they are trying to target everyone but i personally think they are hitting the more mature students rather than younger people.

2. How have the adverts been tailored to the target audience( style of music, pace, voice, etc)
The style of music really don't fit in with the advert, it just sounds to enthusiastic for her voice. Also the music is to fast paced for the voice. Also she needs to try and sell it more as it just sounds like a pirate fm advert rather than trying to make people come here.

3. Do they show a good understanding of the colleges target audience?
Not really as they don't understand the young persons point of view of the music.

Advert 2:
1. Who are the target audience?
I think they are actually attracting everyone. They are doing this really well as it suits everyone and all needs.

2. How have the adverts been tailored to the target audience( style of music, pace, voice, etc)
His voice is quite quick but not too fast too not catch information. The style of the music is slow then builds up. The pace of the music and the voice work really well together.

3. Do they show a good understanding of the colleges target audience?
Yes they know exactly what they want.

Advert 3
1. Who are the target audience?
I think they have tried to hit everyone and they are sort of doing this but mainly hitting the parents of the students.

2. How have the adverts been tailored to the target audience( style of music, pace, voice, etc)
They have tried to make the music sound appeal to young people but they haven't done really well. His voice sounds quite good and suits the target audience of everybody. The pace of the music and voice sounds out of sync with each other.

3. Do they show a good understanding of the colleges target audience?
Not really as this tune doesn't appeal to the age range of 16 - 19 year olds.

Pitch

We have three ideas to promote the college. Our first idea is a video promoting the new style of the college. the main aspect of the video is to introduce the option of students coming from abroad to study here. We will try to show that they can study a language or any course that they would like to study and that they will get lots of support and help doing that. Also like to emphasise new build and views round penzance to make more students choose penwith rather than truro or any other grade 1 college. We will have interviews from normal students and staff and some from students who are having language support and help. We would include quick interviews, images and other clips with a catchy up beat song in the background to make people to remember the penwith video and to make our college stand out to people making choices about what college to go to. We will end with a catchy sentence while the 3-D video is playing.

We would also like to make a 4 page booklet containing just pictures and comments of students and build and courses. this would be a product used just to engage future students to come here if they like what they see, then they can read some of our course books. We would have the background of the booklet pages in the style of penwith college.

Internet advert: We would like to utilize people's curiosity to make a little advertisement for our college. It looks like a peice of paper full of different questions and it would be connected with our college style, and these questions all around a circle. in the middle of the circle, it has a small word, when people try to look at it it would say penwith college. we would start the advert with a far view of the college with the aspect of people wondering what it is and what it offers like looking through a small hole.
I think here I was a Teamworker and Self manager as we did the pitch together and I had to work out what I was going to say.

Outline of Brief / minutes (Martin Tucker, Jean Mooney) - Primary research

1. Who is your client? Our client is martin tucker. He is the director of the Penwith campus.

2. Outline the brief? Our brief is to make marketing materials to promote our new campus at Penwith college. The idea is to show our success at the college and the student’s experience.

3. What deadlines have you been asked to work to? We have to work to our scheme of work and Martin Tucker’s deadline. We have to finish everything by the Easter holidays. Also we will pitch our ideas to martin on January 29th.

4. What company are you working for? We will be working for Penwith college. We will be promoting the new build and new start at Penwith college.

5. What messages would they like you to convey about their company / product? They would like us to convey these things: *Design *Student Focused College *New Specialised Facilities and that it will be the best college in southwest.

6. What is the unique selling point of the company (USP)? The top selling point of the company is the student’s enjoyment and top quality facilities and excellent results.

7. What mediums would they like productions to be created in? They wo
uld like any type of medium or mediums. Martin said he would like for us to put ourselves in the minds of who is thinking about coming here and think what they would like.

8. What is the budget for the commission? There is no limited budget we just take our price to martin tucker and see what he thinks.

9. What are the Client’s principal goal / mission statement? Again the students come first and it is important they get the best experience.

10. Which design agency or marketing team would they usually use? (Competition)
They usually design themselves or local companies.

11. Is there anything in particular you would like us to document? He would like us to show pictures of students and comments from them. He would also like to see the view of St. Michaels Mount in there.

12. What health and safety requirements should you observe? We have to think of taken photos because you need people’s permission. Also if we have to go on the building site to film or take photo’s we need to have an induction about the site and safety issues.

13. What would the client want to see in a good proposal? He wants it to catch people’s eye and show things that are different to other colleges marketing.

14. What audiences does the client want you to target? Everyone the community, adults, teenagers. He wants it to become a good aspect of the community again.

15. How will the productions be used in the future? He will use it every time he goes some where to promote the college. Also it will be a good way to show students who want to come here if they can’t come down here right away (if they live far away).

Jean Mooney came to talk to us about the marketing side of the commission project. She talked about where to go if we need printing budgets, information or questions answering.
She also talked about what the colleges design on their products look like at the moment. For example the colour scheme representing the college, the layout on the products.
She said you have to make sure the design really appeals to your target audience. She also said that you have to get the message across that it is a student focused college and that the students are the main aim of everything they do.

Emma Kelly asked what we all were doing in detail, how much the products would cost to make. Also she talked about the general marketing of Penwith college. She came to talk to us around january/ february time I think. She asked us if there was anything we needed from her and ifthere was we could email her whenever we like asking questions. She helped me out buy sending links to a few websites that about our kind of budgets.

I think we all had to work together and all ask questions so we were effective particapators and teamworkers.
